The world is full of iconic brands that we all recognise instantly. Coca-Cola, Nike, Apple, Ikea, Starbucks, Google. These are some of the biggest brands in the world, and with good reason.
But what sets them apart from their competitors? Why do so many people pick an iPhone over a Samsung phone? Why drink Coke instead of Pepsi? Why use Google instead of Yahoo?
Because of the brand.
The brand of a business is unspeakably important. It is more than just your company's name, it's your business's identity. It's your tagline, your logo, your colours, your marketing, your products. Your brand sets you apart from other companies similar to you.
So how do you create a great brand identity? The secret is simplicity.
Pick 2 to 3 positive words that you would like your customers to associate with your business. Words like elegant, fun, luxurious, professional, or cool. Use descriptive words so that when you start designing your brand, you have a word that you can immediately go to as inspiration.
Choose a company logo that is simple, but effective. Cluttered logos with lots of illustrations and fonts are very confusing look at. Keep it simple with a clean, attractive font that fits well with your business model.
Choose colours that complement each other and fit with the mood of your business. For example, a law firm would use simple, monochromatic colours. An ice-cream shop might use light pastel colours. A gym would use bold, bright colours. Colours can convey many different moods, so choose wisely!
